UKSPI was established in the fall of 2003, but it's origins can be traced as far back as 1996. The driving force forthe creation of UKSPI was in the mind of Chris House who was passionate about the paranormal. This occured after experiencing paranormal activity in a number of supposidly haunted location.
As a child UKSPI's founder Chris House spent a lot of time in the walls of the Haunted Abbey at Netley. Here they spent a lot of time searching for ghosts, yet having little luck. Every other Saturday, equipped with Peter Underwood's 'The A to Z of British Ghosts' he travelled the long bus ride to Netley Abbey, spending the day there.
In 1997, Chris House moved his interest in the paranormal to the internet. Chris House built a highly successful geocities website discussing a reviewing other people's paranormal experiences. Chris House called this website, 'Ghost Group UK' The website ran for 6 years before the website was changed by Chris House to the official UKSPI website.
In 2003, Chris House took this interest one step further and decided to look for other people in Southampton who shared the same interest. Creating a MSN Community, they soon found a number of people who were interested in establishing the group.
The newly founded group appealed for members using a various number of websites, and a meeting was set up at a bar in Southampton City Center. The result was 5 people, all that was needed was a name. The name was created by Chris House, and the original name was 'The Society Of Paranormal Investigators' the group was finally christened with the name. SPI then managed to get into contact with the heritage department of Southampton City Council. Southampton City Council were very keen in backing the project, and SPI was off the starting post. After investigating the Tudor House Museum in Southampton, and featuring on several radio stations, TV stations and local newpapers, the offers for other properties flooded in.
UKSPI started off as being Southampton-based, but this would limit the group success. SPI decided to change this to 'Wessex Based' and it still uses this claim today. SPI was distraught to see that another organisation in USA had the same name. SPI wanted to be individual, and have it's own name. This caused Chris House to add UK to created UKSPI, this gave the organisation a sence of belonging, and gave patriotism to the country in which the organisation was founded, it also went with the URL of the new .co.uk website. UKSPI created it's own forum, one which had never been seen on a paranormal website. This allowed members from UKSPI as well as other organisations to communicate at share experiences across the world.
As members of the public joined, some of which were sentients and mediums, UKSPI had to change its name asgain. UK Society of Paranormal Investigators, we became UK Society for Paranormal Investigations, and UKSPI became a hardcore research organisation.
By 2005, the UKSPI core group has increased significantly to its present level to form a team that has impressed some of the hardest critics. Several spin off organisations have been created from former members of UKSPI, however, most still use UKSPI's methods, and have had little success in the paranormal community. Even through the hard times, UKSPI has managed to reshuffle and recruit new members.
Today UKSPI is a very respected organisation, and is a world leader in research.
It has a very strong team, and has been praised by some of the most famous haunted
properties. UKSPI is one of the country's leading paranormal organisations,
and we are pround of our achievements, and is proud to share its results and
experiments with the paranormal society.
